According to the U.S. Department of Labor "Employment of computer and information systems managers is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2014. " They also state that "Persons in these jobs will become increasingly vital to their companies."

Along with this positive job outlook forecast is the fact that those with degrees can earn very good salaries. In 2004 the median annual earnings for information technology managers was approximately $93,000 yearly. Average starting salaries for high-level information technology managers ranged from $80,000 to $112,000 yearly.

In the last 20 years there has been an increasing demand for information technology professionals driven by the needs of businesses that use computer technology, which almost always including networking. Today every business has a computer, some as few as 5 or 6 and other's have hundreds, if not thousands. These companies are looking for professionals who can be responsible for web development and system administration. While an Associates' Degree can get you an entry level position in most companies, a Bachelor's Degree is usually the minimal requirement for management positions. The U.S. Department of Labor also states that opportunities will be best for those with a Master's Degree with technology as a core component, or those with management information systems degrees.

Obtaining your education through an online degree program can really help you jump start your information technology career. After you obtain your Associate's Degree it is easier than ever to earn your information technology degree through one of many online colleges while you work full-time obtaining valuable on the job experience, and a paycheck. Some employers will even reimburse some or all of the costs of obtaining your degree. Some colleges have accelerated degree programs that can be completed in as little as 13 months. Others have self paced programs where you can learn at your own speed.

Many professionals choose to work while obtaining their degrees. Experience gained while on the job can be very valuable when choosing what area of information technology best suits you. Some prefer to focus on computer security, some become computer networking specialists, some web developers. Other potential career choices are network administrator, assistant LAN manager, computer repair specialist, systems integrator and computer support analyst.
